Leschenault Biosecurity Group

Community's Tool To Minimise Local Impacts Of Pests And Weeds

Leschenault Biosecurity Group

The Leschenault Biosecurity Group (LBG) is made up of volunteer members representing the shires of Dardanup, Donnybrook, Capel and Bunbury.

The group has formed out of community concern for declared pests, primarily narrow-leaf cottonbush (Gomphocarpus fruticosus) which is increasingly becoming a major impediment to the livelihood of producers and landholders.

The Leschenault Biosecurity Group takes a positive and proactive approach to facilitating declared pest management and is focused on increasing community awareness on declared pests and their management; and on achieving on-ground outcomes to compliment the great work the majority of individual landholders are already doing.

As a representation of community, the group relies on membership to determine it’s priorities and goals in pest management. The higher the community involvement, the better the group can represent our needs. Sign up today using the link below.

Introduction Of Declared Pest Rate To The LBG Operational Area

The LBG is intending to introduce an annual Declared Pest Rate, commencing at the start of the 2019 financial year. If introduced, the State Government will match the landholder input dollar for dollar. These funds will allow the LBG to assist landholders to manage pests through the coordination of pest control programs; access to information, equipment and subsidies; and to communicate community needs to other land managers. Many Recognised biosecurity groups across Western Australia have already introduced a Declared Pest Rate or are in the process of implementing a Declared Pest Rate (e.g. Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group, Blackwood Biosecurity Inc.).

To ensure the long-term certainty of pest management in the LBG Operational Area, the LBG proposes to raise the following rate over the 2019-20 period:

Landholders who will be subject to the Declared Pest Rate include all land classed as ‘rural freehold’ one hectare (1 ha) in size and above, located within the LBG Operational Area (see our Operational Area map below). The funds raised from the Declared Pest Rate will be spent within the LBG Operational Area on pests and weeds that the community identifies as a priority. As a result of community input and discussions with other stakeholders, the LBG has developed an Operational Plan for the 2019-20 financial year: Proposed Operational Plan 2019-20
